I loved and hated this book I hated this book for the many bummed out nights I had after reading a page or two There is so much hate deception repression monopolizing Red baiting torturing disappearing and executioning in this history of 20th century Latin American religious and political upheaval that many nights I was like God humans suck I loved this book for being a well researched extensive and uncompromising account of the Latin American Catholic hierarchy taking a stand against fascism and imperialism in Latin America as well as against its own history The lay folk and the clergy who were censored harassed beaten tortured and killed wholesale for their fight for dignity and self ownership in USA sponsored dictatorships are as much martyrs for the Church as any patron The amount of CIA manipulation that goes on in this historical clusterf ck has already filled multiple volumes many of which Lernoux references heavily The apologies our past political leaders every US president of the 20th century and economic leaders I m looking at you Milton Friedman have made for these murderous regimes will churn your stomach The never ending Red baiting and fear mongering over Marxist subversion and communist infiltration will make your eyes roll than reading a Fox News War on Christmas op ed The horrific torture methods and interrogation tactics utilized by these regimes sometimes taught to them by the good ole US of A will make your mind see things it can t unsee Most importantly though it hopefully will inspire you as it did me to have a little faith once in a while and to keeping trying for a better world rather than succumb to cynicism and fatalism
