Beauty author Christina Chiu (PDF) Beauty is a fierce book It portrays with unflinching honesty the trials and traps that women often face The novel is sweeping in its close up view of Amy Wong’s life from her years as a teen to those of her as an older adultWhile reading this book the narrative construction reminded of Siel Ju’s Cake Time a novel told in interlinking stories Chiu’s work moves chronologically but often has gaps Despite the missing

I wanted to like this book The topic of a young Chinese American woman who wants to be a fashion designer intrigued me The opening chapter a scene in which sixteen year old Amy Wong overhears her father s mistress insulting her mother and her mother spitting back was compelling But overall I was disappointed Now that I ve finally made my way to the end I find it to be one of those books that forces me to analyze why it didn t work for me There may be some spoilers not sure if readers will think so I don t really think so but proceed with that in mindSome things admittedly are probably my own idiosyncracies and not actual flaws in the book For example it s in present tense and while now and then I love present tense narration most of the time I find it seriously annoying I didn t like it here Yes it s supposed to give a sense of immediacy and that works for the first chapter it would also work for some of the others if they were read as stand alone pieces but this turns out to be a novel that takes Amy Wong from sixteen to seventy eight and for the most part the present tense narration seemed trendy a long lived trend since there were already jokes about present tense writers back in the 80s than immediateI also found the characters almost entirely unlikable Yeah I know we don t have to like characters and it s just me that I tend not to like characters who are heavily into brands and consumer goods but I wanted to like and sympathize with Amy Wong and for most of the book I couldn t really Up until her second marriage when she develops a deep bond with her stepson Toby she comes across as a shallow bratty person Sure a shallow and bratty person with some genuine strengths and genuine problems but one whose inner life and this is first person narration seems to revolve purely around 1 resentment of family 2 ambition to be a fashion designer and 3 sex Now these are all great things for a character to deal with but the reader is stuck in Amy Wong s not particularly compassionate or insightful head We never see why she likes anyone apart from sexual attraction until Toby comes along she does have a long term friend named Ben but their friendship is never developed and it s never clear why Ben or anyone else except Toby likes Amy beyond that she s beautiful and presumably they are white guys with a thing for Asian women In the latter part of the book true we do see that Amy and her first husband have changed and learned to respect and support each other but it feels as though Amy grows through mothering Toby than through anything else including bearing her biological son Alex who through most of the book is pretty obnoxious at one point Amy loses control and beats himI wonder whether the book s structure is also somewhat problematic in terms of getting the reader to root for Amy It s set up in chapters that jump from one important time to another with gaps of years in between That in itself isn t a bad thing in fact it could be great but when coupled with first person present tense narration that doesn t do much to tie things together it can jar the reader The synopsis on the back didn t hint that the novel takes Amy into old age so whenever I began a new chapter I had to reorient myself what suddenly she s got a toddler Even when I should have realized how the novel was structured it was jolting to move to a conversation with Amy s adult granddaughter And I should have been able to recognize and accept this structure early on So maybe my fault as a reader but I kept expecting development of each phase or transition chapter titles with years included maybe It s not as if writers haven t been presenting readers with whole life accounts of protagonists for a very long timeThe passage of time is problematic in another way too While we follow Amy from age sixteen to age seventy eight it always feels like the action is taking place in some vaguely defined period between about 1990 and 2015 It can t begin earlier than the 1980s because there s mention of Louboutin and Jimmy Choo shoes in chapter 2 but the 90s seem likely Oddly for a novel with so much focus on fashion which changes regularly there s no sense of how people dress differently as the decades pass when I read that Amy s granddaughter went through an annoying Doc Marten phase as a teen I thought WHAT Who s going to be wearing Doc Martens in approximately 2055 Throughout the novel we just get brands plus some descriptions of particular designs I get that couture has different goals than ready to wear please read my friend Alison Bancroft s Fashion and Psychoanalysis but there s no real sense of changing styles such as low rise vs high rise pants or the animal rights rejection of fur and even leather The result is surprisingly unevocative unsensuous description of clothing and shoesOkay enough Basically this had a lot of potential the life story of an ambitious Chinese American woman who experiences abuse and tragedy and gradually develops some wisdom and serenity but for me it fell short Other readers have loved it and it s won awards
